Kristina’s House of Hope is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and was founded in February 2019. KHOH consists of two furnished homes and began housing women in the fall of 2020. With your help, we can continue to provide immediate and meaningful assistance to women in need in Oswego County.
Our mission is to provide immediate assistance to displaced or homeless women, many of whom are struggling with drug and/or alcohol dependency. KHOH provides a safe, controlled environment in which women can live while they work toward stability and self-reliance. Our tenants have the opportunity to attend rehabilitation services, seek job training, and receive counseling while taking advantage of other services provided by nearby agencies, as appropriate.
Our vision at KHOH is to help women in memory of Kristina, who died tragically when she was 20 years old. Kristina was a joyous and empathetic spirit who believed in empowering other women; KHOH carries that same spirit within its walls as we work to help women in need in Oswego County. Our goal is to give our tenants a “second chance” by providing immediate assistance and empowering them to build a solid foundation for the rest of their lives. We are determined to help women with a desire to clean up their lives and become functioning members of society, free from addiction. KHOH provides one-on-one assistance to help each woman become self-sufficient and independent. We believe the best way to change a life is through a multifaceted approach, like that provided by KHOH: combine outpatient rehabilitation and counseling with a stable home environment. Our tenants are removed from situations that could cause them to regress while simultaneously being provided a home free from drugs and alcohol where they can learn basic life skills, which are not covered during traditional rehabilitation but essential to success.
In our first year, KHOH established a board, a bank account, a website, a Facebook page, and began collecting donated items and funds. Our board members met with community leaders and members to educate the community about its mission and to garner support. We began collection and storage of donated furniture and gathered all legal paperwork required for tenants to begin living at KHOH. We purchased two homes, and by the fall of 2020 we began accepting women in need of our help. To date, we have helped more than a dozen women at KHOH.
By founding KHOH, a desperate need in Oswego County is being filled. The coronavirus pandemic has created an increased need for stable housing in our community. This is a challenging time for the healthiest individuals in our community, and women who are struggling with drug and/or alcohol dependency are facing every known trigger while also fighting depression, anxiety, and isolation in addition to the added stressors of strained finances, health, and relationships. A healthy, structured environment provides them with the foundation needed to promote health and continued recovery. KHOH continues to combat COVID-19 by following procedures for safe management of the coronavirus at KHOH. Our precautions include resident screening and temperature checks as well as isolation protocols and connection to care for any residents who test positive for COVID-19. KHOH is ensuring our tenants have the opportunity to receive the vaccination. It is important to promote the health and wellbeing of all through prevention, intervention, and education, and we are dedicated to providing a safe place for our women to live while combating the spread of COVID-19. During the pandemic, we continue to ensure they are able to seek medical care from their primary care providers and specialists while searching for permanent housing and improving their personal and professional skill sets.
